WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Regional NRM Strategy

Integrated whole-of-region planning for NRM is new for the Southern region, and indeed for the whole of Tasmania. The Southern NRM Strategy is the result of over two years of consultation, analysis and planning, which started in 2002 with a series of public forums and the formation of the Southern Regional NRM Association.

The Southern Regional NRM Committee was established in 2003 and has been given the responsibility by the minister under the Natural Resource Management Act 2002 to develop and implement a Southern Regional NRM Strategy. This Strategy must include appropriate standards and targets consistent with the overarching National level objectives and must meet accreditation criteria at both the State and National level.
The Strategy is a pivotal document for natural resource management in the Southern region and will provide a blueprint for an integrated approach to investment in priority NRM outcomes.

It is essential to look beyond individual issues, and take account of the links between our natural systems. In addition the Strategy :

  • Provides a 50 year framework for a coordinated approach to NRM action
  • Is the driver for achieving the community’s NRM vision and goals
  • Aims to ensure our natural resources are managed sustainably for the benefit of present and future generations, taking into account environmental, social and economic considerations
  • Coordinates NRM better, without creating additional layers of bureaucracy
  • Builds on existing and prior work, and support existing local, catchment and coastal organisations in implementing and further developing their plans, policies and strategies
  • Provides direction for investment and partnerships in NRM by Federal, State and Local Governments, industry and the regional community to address common issues
  • Ensures people affected by or responsible for addressing a problem have the capacity to do so
  • Enhances community awareness of the need for change and ability to participate in the change process
  • Gets as many results on the ground as possible – ie improvements in resource condition
  • Puts in place a benchmarking, monitoring and evaluation system to tell us whether our actions are effective, and put in place a process for review and adaptive management of the strategy over time.
  • Will be an evolving and adaptive document that is responsive to community expectations, aspirations and actions
