Our Region's Priorities:

MANAGING MARINE, ESTUARINE AND COASTAL SYSTEMS

SCOPE

  • Protecting the ecology of marine, estuarine and coastal systems

  • Managing the interface between marine, terrestrial and freshwater systems
  • Sustainable development and use of the coastal zone

This chapter addresses the management of marine, coastal and estuarine systems in the Southern Region. In this document the term ‘coastal zone’ is used more broadly than in the State Coastal Policy, where the ‘coast’ is confined to 1 km inland from the high-water mark. In this Strategy, ‘coast’ refers to any part of the Region directly impacted by the sea or potentially affected by coastal flooding or sea level rise. The ‘coastal zone’ will therefore vary, depending on local topography.

Management of weeds, pests and diseases is a cross-NRM issue. The ecological impacts of marine, coastal and estuarine weeds and pests are discussed in this chapter, while the economic impacts of weeds, pests and diseases and integrated Management Actions for weeds, pests and diseases are in Chapter 8: Managing Native Flora and Fauna.

For more detailed information please see Chapter 7: Managing Marine, Estuarine and Coastal Systems in the Strategy.

Appendix 9 in the Supplementary Information document lists the many existing programs and practices relating to marine, coastal and estuarine management in the Region.
