About our Region

The Southern region has a population of 229,256 and covers an area of 25,482.8 square kilometres (approximately 38% of Tasmania). The Southern Region as characterised by:

  • complex and diverse geological systems with dramatic topography and rich scenery
  • three major river and estuarine systems (Derwent, Huon and Gordon Rivers) as well as parts of the north-flowing Macquarie and Esk Rivers and numerous smaller and coastal catchments and estuaries
  • a high degree of terrestrial, estuarine and marine biodiversity
  • well developed industries such as agriculture, tourism, forestry and wild and farmed fisheries which are dependent on the quality of the natural resources for longer term viability and sustainable development
  • a high dependence on natural resources for urban maintenance functions through provision of electricity, clean air and water
  • extensive Aboriginal values, such as Aboriginal landscapes, Aboriginal sites and cultural heritage values. Included within these are marine sites, plants, animals, coastal waters and inland waters).
  • extensive areas with State, national and world conservation significance, including the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and the Macquarie Island World Heritage Area.
