A series of open stakeholder forums were held during 2002 to implement the Natural Resource Management (NRM) Act 2002 as it relates to the Southern Region.
The forums resolved to form the Southern Regional NRM Association Incorporated with the sole purpose of providing the legal and governance framework for the formation and operation of the Southern Regional NRM Committee. The Committee has been assigned responsibility by the Minister under the NRM Act to develop and implement a southern regional NRM strategy.

- The sustainable management of natural resources in Southern Tasmania consistent with the Natural Resource Management Act 2002 and the principles of natural resource management
- A strategic, inclusive and integrated approach to regional natural resource planning and management aimed at achieving a balance between regional economic and social development and the need to protect the environment
|
- The formation and effective governance of a Southern Regional Natural Resource Management Committee, in accordance with the rules of the Association and the terms and conditions of the Minister’s declaration
- A spirit of consensus and partnership that enables all stakeholders and the community to take positive action and fulfill their respective roles and responsibilities for sustainable natural resource planning and management
There is also an annual membership fee of $10.
If your organisation is not a legal entity in its own right, you may wish to consider becoming an incorporated association to be able to join the Association and to participate in its activities and consensus decision-making process. The alternative is to join, or formally affiliate with, an existing NRM organisation, which is a stakeholder member, so you or your organization can attend and contribute to Association meetings. However, only the Association’s stakeholder member representatives will be able participate in its consensus decision-making process.
