Strategies & Proposals

What are we doing?

Regional NRM Strategy

The Region’s future depends on sustainable industries and healthy ecosystems. As stewards of the natural resources we all have a stake in managing and protecting these assets for future generations. The people of the Cradle Coast Region are fundamental to sustainable natural resource management –people who farm the land, manage the forests, fish the seas, extract the mineral ores, work for industries and government and enjoy recreation in our reserves.

The Regional Committees have been given the role of developing a Regional NRM Strategy. The Strategy is a document of critical importance to the Region as it sets out a coordinated and integrated approach to managing and protecting the Region’s natural resources.

In achieving sustainable NRM we must deal with challenges that include:

  • changes in land use
  • a growing population along the coast
  • providing meaningful employment
  • increasing the knowledge, values and aspirations of the community
  • providing financial and social support for protecting and enhancing natural resources.

Our strategy helps us reach our vision of ‘vibrant communities committed to protecting natural resources and actively involved in managing the resources for their environmental, social and economic benefits and values, to ensure a sustainable future for our Region.’ It identifies the priority issues and how we can tackle the causes of these, while balancing environmental, social and economic concerns, so we reach this destination.  Copies of the Strategy can be downloaded from the Library.

Regional Weed Strategy

The Regional Weed Strategy, launched on the 19th May 2005, consolidates the weed management issues of the Cradle Coast region, and sets clear, achievable goals and targets, underpinned by practical actions. Many of these have been integrated into the Regional NRM Strategy.

Investment Proposal

An Investment Proposal has been created as a business plan to seek funding for the proposed activities that will address the issues identified in the Strategy. Not all of these issues can be addressed, so key activities to be funded have been prioritised. These include works that:

  • support the objective of developing the resource based industries so they can operate profitably and on an environmentally sustainable basis
  • centre on the adoption of and compliance with current best practice to facilitate the reduction in point source pollution
  • include actions involving collating and analysing existing regional data whilst providing incentives for landowners to conserve and restore habitat on their land
  • will develop and implement management plans for the region’s nationally significant coastal areas
  • develop and implement management plans for sites of geoheritage significance
  • focus on providing relevant technical support and advice on Natural Resource Management issues whilst facilitating partnering amongst stakeholders
